What am I?
Sugar gliders are found in the tree tops of Australia, Indonesia, Tasmania, Papua-New Guinea and in my home. Sugar gliders got thier name because they have a preference for sweet foods and a gliding membrane similar to that of a flying squirrel. They are nocturnal marsupials which means they sleep during the day and have their babies in pouches. Thier average life span, in captivity, is 12-15 years. Adults weigh about 4 oz, and 5-6 inches long with a tail of equal length. They are very social animals within thier colony, when you handle them every day you become part of their colony. They need a lot of human attention, they are not an animal you purchase and just put in a cage to live. If you are not able to play and handle them every day they may not be the perfect pet for you. It is best that you keep them in pairs.
Sugar Gliders
Sugar Gliders can be excellent family pets. They are very loyal, intelligent, and love to play. They can live along and happy life (12-15 years) with the right loving home. My gliders have developed a strong relationship with me and my family. They are part of our family. We spend a lot of time with them. They are at least out of their cages with us 2-4 hours a night. They are nocturnal but that can be a benefit, they can sleep at home while you work or you can take them every where with you in a carrying pouch. My oldest son likes to carry them with him every where. When you carry them with you nobody knows because they sleep most of the time. Carrying them will also help you form a stronger bond with them because they get use to your scent. We can have Peanut Butter out of the cage and my son will walk in the room and he will jump to him if he gets close. We hold mama daily when joeys are in her pocket. When our joeys are born (oop-out of pocket) this is their birthday from this day on they are held daily. At first with mama til they get a little bigger.
